Gardening Essentials
A good sprayer is an essential item for any gardener. You can use them to make a lot of gardening jobs much easier; from watering the lawn to cleaning your patio. There are a few different types of sprayer to choose from, and each one is best for different things. If you already know what you’re looking for, you can find all our quality garden sprayers and pressure washer sets above. If you’re not sure, keep reading; we’ll explain a bit more about what each model does and what it’s good for.
Pump Sprayer
The trusty pump sprayer has been around for decades. While its design has been tweaked and modernised over the years, the principles are basically the same. Pump sprayers are made of three main parts; a pump – which is where they get their name – a tank, and a lance, which is the bit that actually squirts water. They’re fitted with a handle which you have to pump up and down to force air into the unit. As it fills with air, this quickly increases the pressure inside the unit, which forces the liquid inside the sprayer – whether it’s just water, weedkiller, fertiliser, or something else – out of the tank and into the lance. The liquid stays inside the unit until you release it by squeezing the lance trigger, which allows it to spray out as a pressurised jet.
Pump sprayers are simple, but that doesn’t mean they’re all the same. For example, our sprayers are designed with an efficient pump mechanism that doesn’t allow air to leak out after you’ve pumped it in. This means they maintain air pressure well, so you don’t have to constantly keep stopping your work to pump the pressure back up. They’re also fitted with a safety release valve, which will trigger and release some of the pressure if you accidentally build it up too much. This will help prevent you from damaging your sprayer.
The benefits of pump sprayers are that they’re low-cost, low-maintenance tools that can tackle a massive range of jobs. If you want to treat your veg patch with pesticides, you can. If you want to cover a large bed with weedkiller before sowing, a pump sprayer will let you do it in a few minutes. They can even be used to spray on even coatings of patio cleaning solutions like Simply Spray and Walk Away! As they’re so simple, they’re low-cost and easy for anyone to use, so they’re worth keeping in the shed as a backup even after you’ve upgraded to more powerful sprayers.
Electric Sprayer
Electric sprayers work in exactly the same way as pump sprayers with one big difference; they use electric power so you don’t need to pump them yourself. This makes them extra-convenient if you need to use your garden sprayer a lot, or if you need to cover a large area. Because you don’t have to pump it yourself, you never have to worry about pumping too much or too little pressure into the sprayer, so you’ll get a perfectly even spray every time you use it.
Our electric sprayer uses a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, so you don’t need to have it plugged into the power to use it. The battery lasts for between 6-8 hours when fully charged, which – combined with the 12L tank – makes it best for big spraying jobs. If you have a large allotment or a big garden, or if you don’t fancy having to physically pump up your sprayer from time to time, our electric sprayer is the best solution!
Which One Is Best for Me?
Each product has its advantages and is well-suited to different jobs. There is no one best option, but there will be one that’s best for your specific purpose.
Pump sprayers are simple and versatile. Their simplicity also means they’re cheap to buy, so if you only have a small vegetable patch or lawn to maintain, you likely don’t need anything more. For under £20 (in the case of our great-value 5L model), you can pick up a pump sprayer that can water plants, spray weedkiller and pesticide, or use some patio cleaning solutions (like Simply Spray and Walk Away or Black Spot Remover). If you have a larger garden or patio to maintain, you might want the extra convenience of an electric sprayer. They cost a bit more, but for many, the convenience of not having to pump them manually makes it worth it.
