Our Guide to Making the Most Out of Every Inch of Your Garden
One thing we always need more of is space. We’re always eyeing up bigger homes, bigger garages and bigger gardens. Unfortunately, there’s rarely any way to actually get more space without paying through the nose. Or is there? Even if your garden is smaller than you’d like, you can still make the most of the space you do have. There are some really simple tricks you can use to make it seem bigger, and we’ve shared 5 of the best below! If space is at a premium in your garden, read on to learn how you can quickly and affordably make a small garden feel bigger without the hassle of getting builders in!
1. Cut Out the Clutter
Clutter and overgrowth will make your garden seem enclosed and small so make sure to tidy and trim! It might seem obvious, but an overgrown and cluttered garden will always look smaller than a clean and well-maintained one. Make sure you have some clear boundaries in mind and trim back your lawn and plants so that they stay within them. Dividing up your garden with clean lines like this can actually really help you make the most out of your space as you can be practical and order things based on their purpose. For example, you can have an eating area with garden furniture in it in one section, a pathway in another, a lawn and flowerbeds, and a small patio or decking for entertaining. Splitting your garden into ‘zones’ like this also makes each one dead easy to maintain!
2. Depth Perception
Layering different coloured flowers can really add depth to your garden You want a wide range of vividly coloured flowers, a lush green lawn, and a clean patio or pathway. The contrast between all these different shades will really help create an impression of depth when you look at your garden! Use some iron sulphate on your lawn to give you that rich green colour and contrast it with some brightly coloured flowers of different shapes and sizes. Deep reds, yellows and purples layered against green bushes or grass will all look especially great! Another great way of adding a sense of depth to your garden is to put a layer of gravel around pathways and paving slabs. Again, this creates a contrast and puts a dividing line between the concrete surface and other surfaces in your garden. Make your garden a swathe of eye-catching contrasts that you can see, smell and feel and you’ll really feel like you have much more space.
3. Reach for the Sky
Climbing plants offer an extra dimension of beauty to your garden Even if you don’t have a very long or wide garden, you still have all the space you could ever need if you look upwards! If space is tight in your yard, add in lots of vertical elements to make the most of every dimension. Small trees, trellises, and climbing plants covering a lot of vertical space will make your garden look really lively while still leaving you plenty of space to play with on the ground. Complement this with some hanging baskets for some natural colour to really make your garden pop!
4. Clean Lines and Clean Surfaces
Simply Spray and Walk Away will give you a clean patio for relaxing, dining, and partying We’ve already mentioned that clean lines are a great way to make the most of a small garden space, but we mean clean in more ways than one! Your control of colour is a massive part of making a small garden look bigger, so the last thing you want is to have moss, green mould and algae creeping in and throwing off your colour palette! It sounds like a little detail, but in a small garden the little details can add up to make a big problem if they’re not all on point. If you have a patio, paving, decking, or and hard surfaces in your garden, keep slippery green mould and algae away from them with some Simply Spray and Walk Away. It not only cleans green mould and algae within days, but it also forms a protective barrier preventing growth from returning for up to 6 months!
5. Be Curvy
Subtle curves can do a lot to make your garden seem much bigger We’ve mentioned that your garden should be nicely shaped and divided into sections with neat, clean lines a couple of times now. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that clean lines always have to be straight! In fact, incorporating curved lines into your garden is a great idea! Trim your hedge into a smooth wave shape or trim the borders of your lawn into a curve, leading onto a flowerbed. You could even lay a garden path in a curved shape. Curved lines give the impression of movement and will naturally make your garden feel much more spacious than it actually is. The most important thing is to make sure your curves, whether they’re on a trimmed hedge, a bush, or a lawn, look really smooth and neat, so it might take a bit of practice to get it perfect. When you do, you’ll notice the difference straight away!
