Lawn maintenance isn’t easy. However, if you want a lush lawn you can throw the ultimate garden party on, you don’t always have to work your green fingers to the bone – let Iron Sulphate do some of the work! Iron Sulphate is the secret weapon of amateur and professional gardeners across the world and can make maintaining the lawn of your dreams a whole lot easier. If you haven’t heard of it until now, that’s understandable – the name Iron Sulphate doesn’t always sound terribly exciting after all. Despite that, there are lots of reasons to get excited about this cracking compound! Just read on and follow our advice, and soon enough your lawn will make your neighbours green with envy!
1. Pumping Iron
Watching grass grow can actually be exciting if you treat it right (honest)! Iron is an essential nutrient for making us humans strong and healthy. It turns out the same is true for grass! If your lawn is looking a sickly yellow, it’s crying out for some iron. A liberal spraying with Iron Sulphate will have your grass a vibrant green colour in no time. While it ensures your grass will be silky soft to the touch, on the inside each blade of grass will be tougher than ever as Iron Sulphate also helps protect against cold and diseases. This means your lawn won’t just look great in summer – it’ll look better in autumn and winter too!
2. Worming out pests
Birds digging for food can quickly ruin a spotless lawn Iron Sulphate is slightly acidic. Don’t worry, it isn’t harmful at all! What it does do, however, is make your lawn slightly less appealing to worms, chafer grubs and other things that attract birds who love digging up your lawn for a quick snack. Your grass also loves these slightly acidic nutrients and will become soft and fine, rather than spiky and rough. A good approach is to combine it with some affordable natural pest control methods, such as neem oil (which is especially great for lawn grubs) to ensure your lawn is naturally pest-free!
3. It’s the Boss of Moss
Grass loves Iron Sulphate. Moss, however, definitely doesn’t! Iron Sulphate blackens and kills moss while it greens and strengthens grass, which is pretty much the dream combo for a spotless lawn! You’ll need to mix Iron Sulphate with water to use it, so if you’re having trouble getting rid of a pesky patch of moss, simply mix your solution a little stronger than usual.
4. A Little Goes a Long Way
A 2.5kg tub will last most lawns a long time Iron Sulphate isn’t expensive and a 2.5kg tub, such as the Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate tubs, will last most gardeners quite a while! It all depends on how big your garden is and what exactly you’re using it for – for example if you want it as a moss killer, it’ll need to be used in more concentrated doses – but generally speaking Iron Sulphate is a great-value way to maintain any lawn! Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate is particularly good value as it offers a special iron-rich formula, giving you amazing results even at lower concentrations.
5. Easy to Use
Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate is a professional quality product, so it must be tricky to use, right? Not so! It comes with simple instructions on the tub and even has a simple, frustration-free lid to keep the product fresh all year round. Simply pop some gloves on, mix the desired amount of your product with the correct amount of water (all those details are on the tub!) and you’re good to go! You can also make the process even simpler by picking up some Liquid Iron Sulphate concentrate. A lush green lawn makes for an inviting lawn party! Professional groundsmen have used Iron Sulphate for a long time to harden turf, soften grass and kill moss, but it’s their best-kept secret no longer. Give your lawn the professional treatment in time for summer and see the difference yourself!

Please could you advise if using a 17 litre back pack sprayer how many gramms should you put in as a tonic/ grass greener to that volume? How many sq meters will 15 litres treat? I presume its double that for killing moss.

Hi, You should use 1-2g of iron sulphate per litre per square metre. So for 15L solution, you'd want 15-30g of iron sulphate (depending on what condition your lawn's in - if it's looking weak you might want to put the 30g in) and 15L water.

Hi Keith, Thanks for ordering! We recommend keeping dogs off your lawn until you've watered the iron sulphate down thoroughly (or left it overnight for the rain to deal with) just in case. However, we have been selling this stuff for years now and we've never heard of any issues with dogs ingesting it. It's more of an issue with chickens and rabbits who are always looking for grains to eat, but in the case of dogs, it won't hurt them unless they ingest relatively large amounts.

How soon can you use this product on lawn that has just been over seeded.

You can apply iron sulphate around 3 days after overseeding. You can also apply it right before you overseed.
