Winter is a messy time of year. The weather is wet and muddy, the roads are covered in salt and grit, and the pre-and post-Christmas clutter is all over your house. It can be tempting to put your cleaning jobs off until the spring, but we’re big believers in the saying ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. These five quick cleaning jobs are really simple and will help make your upcoming spring cleaning a breeze.
Clean Your Patio
Winter is rough on patios, paving, and garden paths. They often end up covered in mud, while the wet winter weather creates the perfect environment for moss, mould, and algae to grow. This is more than just an unsightly mess, though – it’s a real slip hazard, so you shouldn’t wait until the spring to clean it all away!
Luckily, cleaning it is a job that takes just a few minutes. Use some Simply Spray and Walk Away on your patio (either in a watering can or a pump sprayer), leave the area alone for a couple of days, and rinse away that dirt. This will stop your path or patio from becoming too slippery in the winter!
Feed Your Lawn
Winter can be rough on your lawn. The harsh weather will weaken the grass and make it more vulnerable to pests and diseases. This means it’s a good idea to feed your lawn at least once through the winter to help it stay strong and healthy.
A slow-release nitrate lawn feed is a good option as it means the lawn feed will continue to work its magic over a longer period. It’s also a good idea to use some iron sulphate, which is also a lawn feed. However, it’s one with a very beneficial side-effect – it slightly increases the acidity of your soil. This makes your lawn much less appealing to common pests like chafer grubs.
Wash Your Car
Your car needs a bit of extra TLC in the winter. The main problem is the amount of salt and grit that are spread onto the roads when ice is forecast. Both will build up on your paintwork and especially on the underside of your car, and will start to eat away at anything they touch. This is known as salt corrosion, and it can severely reduce the lifespan of your car!
This is why regularly washing your car in winter is more important than at any other time of year. It might feel a bit pointless as the muddy conditions outside mean it won’t be long before your car is dirty again, but it’ll help reduce the risk of an expensive MOT failure in the long run!
Clean Your Carpets
Carpet cleaning is one of the quickest ways to totally transform your home. It makes such a big difference, it begs the question; why do so many people only do it when they’re spring cleaning? If you think your house is lacking in colour after you’ve taken the Christmas decorations down, try breaking out the carpet shampoo. Brighter carpets mean brighter, more spacious-looking rooms, while a pleasant smell goes a long way towards making a home feel more welcoming.
Our range of carpet shampoos can all be used with or without a carpet cleaning machine, so they’re really easy for anyone to use.
Watch Out for Mould and Mildew
Mould and mildew are a particular problem in winter. It can actually be an issue all year round, but in the winter we’re all naturally less keen to leave our doors and windows open to ventilate rooms. In bathrooms or laundry rooms, this leads to a lot of moisture on the walls, which creates the perfect conditions for mould to grow. It’s worth regularly wiping your bathroom walls (or any other area suffering from damp issues) with some Mould and Mildew Remover throughout the winter. When the time comes for your big spring clean, you’ll be glad you did this – spending all day scrubbing mould spots off the wall isn’t fun!
