If spring is a time for planting and preparing, autumn is a time for protecting and putting away. Though the jobs at this time of year may not seem as productive and promising as spring ones, as you anticipate the warmer months, these are jobs that you will definitely regret not doing after the colder months have passed.
Here are the main autumn tasks that should be on your list, and the essential products that will make your life easier.
For Lawns
You may think that your lawn has asked enough of you over the spring and summer and that you can ignore it now that the growing season is over. Well, if you want your lawn to continue to look lush and green next year, you need to give it the nutrients it needs to thrive over the winter. Don’t worry, the task at hand is not labour intensive and you don’t even need to wait for a dry day to do it as it will benefit from some wet weather. Applying an autumn lawn feed, such as Pro-Kleen Spring and Autumn Lawn Feed now (and you can repeat it a few times right through until January) will keep it strong and make it resistant to pests and disease, bringing you beautiful grass next year.
You should also be aiming to keep your lawn and paths tidy over the winter as fallen leaves can not only look unsightly but can become slimy when they get wet and even encourage the development of mould and bacteria. Tidy them up in no time with the Pro-Kleen 3 in 1 Leaf Blower, Vacuum and Mulcher. Not only will this save your back sweeping them up, but it also vacuums them neatly into a bag, and shreds them too for mulch or easy disposal.
For Paths and Patios
You may think there’s little point in cleaning up paths, drives, and patios now as they’ll just get dirty over the winter but that’s not quite true. Any green algae and mould on them can become quite slippery once it gets wet and cold will exacerbate the issue.
By far the best strategy is to give hard surfaces a clean-up with a patio cleaner such as Pro-Kleen Simply Spray Patio Cleaner, to get rid of contaminants like these as well as general dirt and stains, and then seal it with PatioSeal Invisible Weatherproof Patio Sealant. This will protect it from the harsh conditions of winter and beyond as the weatherproofing lasts for up to 10 years.
For Garden Equipment
If you want your garden items, such as furniture, to stay in good condition for many years, it really is best to put them away for the winter if you have space in a shed or garage. Give them a clean-up first and then pack them away.
This is also true of your barbecue, and this is the perfect opportunity to give it a really good clean and get rid of all those traces of grease and food. Pro-Kleen BBQ Blitz Powerful Barbecue Cleaner is just what you need for getting it in pristine condition and ready for use when the weather gets warm enough for alfresco dining again next year.
If you are lucky enough to have a hot tub in the garden, you need to decide what you intend to do with it over the winter. Some people love to use their hot tub all year round but with the cost of energy to run them, many are choosing to pack them up and mothball them for the winter. If this is what you intend to do, you must decide whether to empty them of water and give them a good clean, in which case a submersible pump and hot tub cleaner will come in very handy, or leave the water in, which you can do but you will need to add some winteriser.
These may not be glamorous tasks but you will be really pleased with yourself in the spring when it’s time to start using the garden again and everything is ready to go.
