Keeping your carpets clean will not only keep them looking their best and your home smelling - when your carpets you can also breathe easier and keep your family protected from bacteria. Let's take a look at some of the benefits of regular carpet cleaning:
As well as being unsightly, dirty carpets are also bad news for our health:
The truth of fact is your carpets are a breeding ground for bacteria with some carpets holding as much as 200,000 bacteria per square inch! Now, of course, bacteria are present everywhere and they can’t be avoided – however they can certainly be reduced and combatted to manageable levels that won’t impact your health. Bacteria cause allergies and can agitate respiratory problems (such as asthma). They can also increase the risk of dust mites - these tiny bugs can cause allergies and aggravate those who suffer from asthma. Since they love to live in carpets, if you don't clean them regularly then it's likely that you'll end up with an infestation of these critters!
Regular carpet cleaning will help keep Bacteria under control
So now we know the slightly disgusting truth about our carpets, you may be wondering how you can keep on top of this and keep bacteria under control, well the answer is quite simple – regular cleaning. While it may seem like a big undertaking especially if you have a lot of carpet throughout your home, regular carpet cleaning is really the only way to fight against bacteria and the threat of dust mites and keep allergens at bay.
How often should you clean carpets
So, you might be thinking about how often you need to clean your carpets in order to keep them truly clean. Well on top of regular vacuuming, which is recommended at least twice a week as a general rule. But you should also be giving your carpet a full clean, with carpet shampoo every 3-6 months. If you have kids or pets or if you smoke in the house then you should be shampooing more regularly as all these will contribute to bacteria and odour building up quicker, and children are more likely to develop dust mite allergies if they are exposed to large quantities while still young. The more traffic your carpet gets, the more often it needs to be cleaned. Similarly, we recommend more frequent shampooing in areas of high traffic too.
You can't always see the mess.
Carpets can be quite deceiving as you don’t always see the mess or dirt, especially due to large areas being concealed by furniture and due to dirt and bacteria being buried much deeper. So, don’t be fooled even if your carpet looks clean it doesn’t mean it is and you should be sure to keep up with cleaning despite this.
Vacuuming won’t remove odour
If you have pets in your home or have little kids who love playing with their food (and sometimes even eating it), then there's likely going to be some lingering odours on your carpets that aren't going anywhere anytime soon--especially if those odours are trapped inside thick fibres like those found in wool rugs or shaggy styles like Berber or frieze weaves.
While you can use air fresheners or carpet fresheners these will only cover fragrances and not actually remove them at the source which is why they will linger and keep coming back time and time again. These types of fabrics tend not only to trap odours but also absorb moisture from spills such as coffee grounds left behind after brewing up a pot at home; this combination makes them prime targets for mould growth too!
This is why it is recommended to use carpet shampoos as they are designed to deodorise odours – for more stubborn odours such as urine and vomit we would recommend using shampoos that have an enzyme digester that will target and break down bacteria to remove the odour.
What is the best way to clean carpets?
You might be wondering if there is a best practice for how to clean your carpet but honestly, this comes down to a matter of preference. You can use a carpet cleaning machine and this is most often the best choice as it is much quicker and your carpets will usually dry quicker using a carpet cleaning machine. However, for those who only have a few small carpets hand washing your carpets is also an excellent option, just be careful not to use too much water and air out the room to allow for it to dry quicker that way as you do not want to risk undoing all your hard work by leaving too much moisture in your carpet.
At the end of the day, it's important to remember that carpet cleaning is a great way to keep your family healthy and happy. Regularly getting your carpets cleaned will help prevent stains and odours from building up over time, meaning that they won't be as hard to remove when they eventually do appear!
