You might not realise it but salt is a hugely important part of our lives. It has some amazing chemical properties that help to keep us alive, and it becomes even more important in winter. Salt lowers the freezing temperature of ice, meaning water has to get much colder in order to freeze. This means we spread tonnes of it all over our roads every winter to try and stop them freezing over, along with grit to give your car a bit of traction. Unfortunately, there is a downside. All that salt, grit and slush means your car’s bodywork and underside corrode and rust, causing not just an unsightly exterior but also causing headaches around MOT time! As we write this, we’ve just experienced freak snow storms into the start of April. Even though the snow has thawed (finally!), there are still thousands of cars across the country that are slowly being eaten away by salt corrosion! Over time, this will cause severe damage to even the most reliable vehicle. So what can you do to make sure it doesn’t affect you?
Wax On, Wax Off
You know how a hot bath or shower is the best thing after being stuck out in the cold for ages? It turns out that’s true for cars as well! Giving your car a thorough clean after the winter will wash away corrosive salt and other particles that gather on your car. Washing under your car is the most crucial – that’s where all your important and expensive bits are, like the brake lines and the exhaust! Even if your car looks clean, wash it anyway! We can’t emphasise often enough how important this is – many of the effects of salt corrosion aren’t immediately obvious, but they will be once MOT time comes and you’re hit with a bill for a new exhaust. Making sure you use a wax product will also protect your paintwork from other corrosive particles in future. You need to be thorough though, so use a product that you know gets in every nook and cranny in your car.
Foam Party
To make sure there’s no salt rusting your car away in an unseen crevice, we recommend using Pro Kleen Snow Foam with the Pro Kleen Foam Lance. This powerful combo produces a high-pressure jet of thick, cleaning foam that gently expands into every nook and cranny of your car (and it’s strangely satisfying to watch, too…). Once it’s been there for a few minutes, it’ll soften all the dirt, grime and corrosive particles and you can simply rinse it off. The whole process takes just a few minutes – even if you’ve got a massive Humvee – meaning that even during those winter months you can easily find time to wash your car every couple of weeks to stop salt buildup. Although most other snow foams are designed to be used as a pre-wash, this snow foam can also be used as a main wash as it effectively removes dirt and grime and leaves your car looking showroom shiny when rinsed off! It even helps to prevent salt and grit from damaging your paintwork, which is something that can lead to rust. It cares for your car, which means your car will care for you!
