Artificial lawns can be a fantastic investment, not only are they relatively low-maintenance when taken care of they will look great all year round! However, it is important to understand low maintenance does not mean any maintenance. In this blog we will discuss how to keep your lawn clean, odour free and looking its best.
Why Cleaning Artificial Grass is Important
As mentioned above while artificial grass can be much easier to care for than a natural lawn, it does still require some TLC to keep looking its best. When approaching your artificial lawn care routine, it can help to instead think of it as more of a carpet than a traditional lawn. This is because most artificial lawns are usually made of nylon, polyethene, or polypropylene fibres and unlike natural grass, they are subject to staining, discolouring and absorbing odours. This is why it is very important to create a regular cleaning routine just as you would with your indoor carpets in order to keep them fresh, after all, you don’t want your lawn to become covered in stains or have your relaxing yard time ruined by foul odours.
Spot Clean
If you enjoy spending time on your lawn sunbathing with a drink, enjoying a picnic with friends or family or perhaps you have little ones who enjoy playing outside then chances are your lawn will be subject to some spills or messes. These can lead to staining so we recommend spot-cleaning any stains or soiling that you are able to catch on time. You can do this with a pre-mixed solution of water and artificial grass cleaner (you can keep this prepared in a spray bottle) and a firm bristled brush – allowing them to sit for too long will just make the process of removing them even more difficult.
Regularly Remove Debris
On top of spot cleaning we also highly recommend regularly checking your lawn to remove any fallen debris, use a firm sweeping brush to do this in order to get in between all the fibres. We also recommend being extra vigilant during the autumn periods when this may be required more often as fallen leaves that are left to stand will become to rot during rainfall which will not only create an unpleasant odour but will cause staining and discolouration. If you have a large area with lots of trees then invest in a leaf blower or vacuum to make quick work of removing fallen leaves and other debris.
Use the Correct Products
It is important to ensure that you are using the correct products when cleaning your lawn, just like with carpets and upholstery you do not want to use products that risk causing discolouration or that are too abrasive as they can cause the fibres to deteriorate more quickly. That is why it is recommended to use detergents that are specially designed for artificial grass as they will be gentle enough to not affect the fibres while still being able to effectively remove dirt and stains. Using products not designed specifically for use on these synthetic fibres can lead to discolouration and cause the fibres to break down which can lead to your lawn becoming patchy and discoloured which unfortunately cannot be fixed without replacing which can be incredibly costly.
Create a Routine
As with most cases prevention is much easier than the cure – which is why it is important to create a care routine for your lawn to ensure that it can remain well maintained, clean and fresh as doing so is much easier than fixing severely stained and soiled lawns. While there is no set routine that you should use as each yard is different and elements such as weather, if you have pets or how often you use your lawn can be a factor it is important that you create a routine that is suitable for you and your lawn’s needs. However, that being said a good place to start is by ensuring you are sweeping your lawn free of debris at least once a week – increasing or decreasing as you see fit, we also recommend then deep cleaning your lawn at least once a month using detergent.
Homes with Pets Should Be Extra Diligent
One of the most important factors to take into account when creating your care routine is whether you have pets in your home that will be using the lawn to do their business, similarly, if you live in an area with a lot of cats who may also decide to use your lawn as their new toilet then you will need specific formula in order to effectively remove the odours caused by this. This is due to the fact that urine and faeces contain components that cannot be simply cleaned away using normal detergents – you may find these products temporarily cover the odour but once the fragrance fades you will notice the urine smell has remained especially if the weather is particularly humid. Due to this a detergent with a special enzyme formula is required in order to truly remove these odours – the enzymes in these clever formulas will break down the protein and organic matter found in your pet’s waste that causes the smells to linger, it achieves this by speeding up the biodegradation process and breaking down the stubborn matter so that it can then be rinsed away.

Baking Soda is a Natural Freshener
A great freshener to use in between cleaning is something that is not only cheap but there is a good chance you already have something hanging around in your cupboards – that’s right baking soda is great for absorbing and deodorising odours. So, if you want an extra boost of freshness in between cleaning sprinkle some over your lawn and leave to sit for around 30 mins before rinsing or vacuuming away.
We hope that these tips will be able to help you keep your lawn fresh and clean and how important it is to create your own unique lawn care routine to make sure you get the most out of your lawn.
