Shampooing your carpet is a great way to brighten up any room in your house, and it can even add a significant amount of value to your home and help it sell faster! But is it quick and easy enough to be worth it? The answer is certainly yes! Read on for a complete step-by-step guide to cleaning your carpet.
How Often Should I Clean My Carpet?
Man's best friend and carpet's worst enemy! Carpets can often attract a lot of dirt and musty odours without you realising as your carpet is something that you see every day. This means you don’t always notice the gradual changes in the cleanliness of your carpet! Even if you don’t think it needs it, you should clean your carpet at least once every 12 months. If you have pets or young children, consider cleaning it every 6 months. This will ensure your carpet is always fresh and clean, and the more you keep on top of cleaning it, the easier it’ll get.
Do I Need a Carpet Cleaning Machine?
No! At least, you don’t if you use a carpet shampoo that’s suitable for manual or machine use like Pro+ Carpet Shampoo. We strongly recommend Pro+ as it’s so versatile – you can use it manually, or you can use it with any carpet cleaning machine, so it’ll get the job done no matter what.
Before You Shampoo Your Carpet
There are a few steps you should take before you clean your carpets to make sure you get the job done right.
Step 1: Remove All Furniture and Clutter
Clear off your carpet before you start cleaning it Any and all furniture and clutter should be moved out of the room to make shampooing as easy as possible. It’ll also stop water and shampoo splashing on your furniture during cleaning. If you can’t remove furniture from the room for whatever reason, try and shift it to the edge of the room and wrap some plastic around its base to protect it. The clearer your room is, the easier washing the carpet will be!
Step 2: Vacuum the Carpet
Hoover up around your room to get rid of any big bits of dirt and hair and fluff up your carpet so the shampoo will work more effectively. Keep a close eye out for any stains that look like they might need some extra attention.
Step 3: Clean Up Any Stains
Even tough stains can be cleaned out of a carpet Food and wine stains can be quite stubborn to remove, so we recommend pre-treating them with some stain remover. This will start to break down stubborn stains and bring them to the surface of your carpet pile, where the shampoo can easily clear them up. If you’ve got natural stains like urine or sweat in your carpet, you may need some special carpet detergent like Odour Attack! to break them down! Odour Attack! contains natural enzymes that break down proteins in natural stains like urine and vomit, making it an ideal pre-treatment for houses with pets or young children.
Shampooing Your Carpet
We know not everyone has a carpet cleaning machine, so we’ll include the step-by-step guide to cleaning your carpet using a machine and manually below!
How to Clean Your Carpet Without a Carpet Cleaning Machine
Step 1
Mix your Pro+ Carpet Shampoo with some warm water. Use 30-50ml of shampoo for every 1L of water in your solution.
Step 2
You don't need a carpet shampooer to wash your carpets Spray or brush your whole carpet with the shampoo solution, making sure to work from the centre of the room outwards.
Step 3
Wipe away the shampoo or vacuum it up. That’s it! Your carpet should be perfectly clean, but a bit damp, so let it dry before you put all your furniture back.
How to Clean Your Carpet with a Carpet Cleaning Machine
There are a few more steps to using a carpet cleaning machine, but the overall process should be much quicker. Step 1 Fill your carpet shampooer with water and Pro+ Carpet Shampoo using the machine’s instructions. Make sure you know how your carpet cleaning machine works, especially if it’s new.
Step 2
Carpet cleaners spray soap onto a carpet then suck it back up again, so move them slowly for a deep clean Starting in a corner, clean in straight lines using your carpet cleaner. Making straight lines that slightly overlap each other is the most effective cleaning method. Remember to be gentle and slow to allow your carpet cleaning machine to work – the slower the better when it comes to carpet cleaning machines!
Step 3
Once you’re done, empty your carpet shampooer’s dirty water tank into your toilet or chuck it outside. Remember this water will be full of dirt and hair, so don’t pour it down the sink!
Step 4
Fill your shampooer with cold water and repeat step 2. This will get rid of any remaining soap suds that might be left on your carpet. Using cold water is important here, as hot water will just make the soap foam up again!
Step 5
Leave your carpet to dry and give it another vacuum for a clean, fresh finish! Put the furniture back into your room and you’ll immediately notice the difference – it’ll be much brighter than before!
Step 6
Empty your carpet cleaning machine’s water tanks and rinse them out. Leave the tanks out for a few days so they dry properly without encouraging mould growth.
