As the lockdown restrictions are being slowly eased here in the UK, you might be wondering if there are any precautions you can take to help protect you and your family when you start leaving the house more – aside from washing your hands regularly of course! Here are some tips for how to keep the ‘high-touch’ areas in your home as clean and safe as possible.

Your Phone

We are all guilty of this – constantly picking up and looking at our phone – all day long, most of the time for no reason! A very bad habit we all seem to have, so it will come as no surprise that your phone is one of the biggest carriers of bacteria, and studies have shown that viruses and fungi may also be present. Washing your hands before using your phone should help to stop the spread of any bacteria, but as we are constantly touching our phones this may be highly impractical. The easiest and most efficient way to clean your phone is to use disinfectant wipes that are specially designed for use on screens, these are typically lint-free and leave no marks or cause any damage to your phone. This should be done no more than once per day, unless you have been around someone who has coughed or sneezed onto your phone, in which case, wipe those germs away!

Keys

Similar to our phone – we take our keys with us every time we leave the house! They might be passed from family member to family member, placed on the kitchen counter, dining table, any surface in the house and they have probably never been cleaned! I, personally, have never even thought to clean my keys… so I probably should go do that now! To keep your keys clean and hygienic, first take off any soft or decorative keyrings, and also any battery car keys. These will need to be cleaned separately. Place your keys in a small bowl of hot water with a little washing up liquid and scrub them with a scourer or an old toothbrush. This should remove any grime and dirt. once you’ve dried your keys (important to prevent rust!) they can be disinfected with a disinfectant wipe or spray, but this need not be done regularly, unless your keys have been in contact with someone who is or has recently been unwell. Any decorative keyrings or car keys can be hand washed or wiped – be careful with your car key not to get any moisture inside it, a wipe with a damp cloth should suffice.

Remotes

Possibly the second-highest touch item in our homes (after our phones) is the tv remote, or remotes for most of us as we seem to create a collection with all of our gadgets! These too are passed around between family members, so should be cleaned regularly with a disinfecting wipe, ensuring you wipe in the gaps between the buttons too, to kill any bacteria that may have built up there.

Household surfaces

The majority of our household surfaces are cleaned on a regular basis anyway, but the ‘high-touch’ areas should be cleaned more regularly, for example, your kitchen worktops, and the majority of handles in your house, such as door handles, the oven door handle, fridge door handle and the microwave door handle! These are all things that we touch multiple times a day, and probably don’t give much thought to cleaning regularly.

Flooring

Our floors are also one of the biggest places we have in our homes for germs and bacteria to lurk, but these can be kept clean pretty easily.
