In theory, we can all appreciate that the underside of our cars is the part that gets the dirtiest, being in such close proximity to the road. However, how many of us really give it the due diligence it really deserves when it comes to washing our cars?
Something to make washing the chassis easy
The main reason this part of our car doesn’t get the attention it really warrants is that it’s such a tricky area of the car to get to. You can’t see what you’re doing and even with a power washer, you can direct water horizontally but there isn’t enough clearance to do what’s really necessary and that is to direct water up vertically onto the surface.
Well, now you can. The Pro-Kleen Chassis Cleaner is an attachment for your pressure washer (compatible with a variety of pressure washers, including Karcher) that features a rolling line of jets that direct the water up directly onto the underside of the car. The 3 quick connect wands that attach it to the jet washer give you plenty of length, to clean even wide vans and caravans, and can also be used without the chassis cleaner; allowing you to clean the roof of tall vehicles (and anywhere else around the home that requires height, such as guttering).
Why is it so important anyway?
Consider the components that are on the underside of your car: the braking system, including brake fluid lines, brake pads, wheel speed sensors for the anti-lock brakes, rotors, and callipers. There’s also the suspension, the exhaust system, the fuel line, the catalytic converter, and the tailpipe. Allowing dirt, grease, and grime from the roads to build up on these parts can lead to corrosion and rust and that can seriously compromise the safety of the car.
Winter is an especially important time to keep your chassis clean as it is at risk of salt corrosion. Salt corrosion happens when a salt solution is spread on the roads to make them safe in icy conditions. The salt splashes up onto your car and, with prolonged contact, causes oxidisation which corrodes the metal and can cause great damage.
Cleaning the chassis will help to prevent all of these issues as it washes the contaminants away and prevents that build-up from happening. Ideally, you need to be doing this at least twice a year but there is a definite case for doing it more in the winter to prevent the risk of salt corrosion.
The Pro-Kleen Chassis Cleaner is available as a separate attachment (for those who already have a pressure washer – make sure to choose the model with the right adaptor for your brand of equipment) or comes in a complete kit with a jet washer plus lots of other useful tools such as patio cleaner and rotary brush.
