If you are like me, then you love the feeling of climbing into a nice clean bed at the end of a long day! The fresh-smelling sheets, the softness of the fabric – it’s a little piece of heaven! We also know that cleaning our bedding regularly is very important too in order to maintain our hygiene and prevent skin irritation, breakouts or agitating allergies. So, considering this, doesn’t it make sense that we should extend the same courtesy to our pets and their bedding? After all, your pets are more likely to carry dirt on their fur and skin than you which will then transfer onto their bedding or kennels. In this blog, we will take some time to look at why you should be regularly cleaning pet bedding, how often and what products you should be using.
Why You Should Regularly Wash Your Pet Bedding
As mentioned above many of us love the feeling of sleeping in clean fresh sheets, so it stands to reason that our own pampered pets would enjoy this too, after all, most pets especially cats and dogs all have incredibly sensitive noses, and bad odours as well as over perfumed odours can be equally displeasing to them. However, it goes beyond just simply giving your beloved furry friend a fresh place to sleep. Just as washing our own sheets is important for our health, neglecting to clean your pet’s bedding can also have an impact on their health and hygiene too.
Chances are your pet spends a lot of time outside playing, running through dirt, and tall grass and rolling in all kinds of nasty odours (This is in our dog’s innate behaviour so is unfortunately unavoidable) they then relax in their own part transferring all this dirt and bacteria, even if you bathe them if they are then laying in the same dirty bedding after then all your effort bathing them has gone to waste. Pets also shed hair, dander, and skin cells, which can accumulate in their bedding and kennels, creating an environment that fosters the growth of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms this can lead to skin irritation or infections and can also cause respiratory issues in younger and older pets such as allergies and asthma. This can unfortunately lead to pricey trips to the vet's office.
Regularly washing is also important in terms of pest control, dirty pet bedding and kennels can attract pests such as fleas, ticks, and mites, which can infest your home and cause health problems for both you and your pet. Pets can also produce unpleasant odours, especially if their bedding and kennel are not cleaned regularly, which can cause an unpleasant atmosphere for both you and your pets.
How Often Should I Wash Bedding?
So now that we know the importance of washing your pet’s bedding and kennel for their hygiene and health, we will not take a look at the best practices for taking care of their bedding, including how often it should be washed.
You should aim to wash bedding and kennels at least once a week, more often may be necessary if your pet sheds a lot or if you have a pup that enjoys frequent and muddy walks. Before washing bedding take some time to hoover any larger bits of fur and debris that may be stuck in between the fabric. If your pet bed has a removable cover then this can be placed in the washing machine, however, for those without a removable cover we recommend hand cleaning in order to maintain the shape. Regular cleaning will also help to extend the lifespan of your pet's bedding and kennels by preventing the build-up of dirt, grime, and stains that can cause damage over time.
What Products Should I Use
When it comes to washing your petting fabric bedding we recommend using specialised detergents designed for use with pet bedding and clothes. This is highly recommended as our pet’s skin is very different to ours and unlike us, they have a much keener sense of smell. Many household detergents are too perfumed which can be unpleasant and may deter your pets from using their bedding. These detergents also contain abrasive chemicals that can often be too harsh on our pet’s skin, especially those who suffer from sensitive or irritated skin. Detergents specially formulated for use with pet laundry are often much gentler and with mild to no fragrance. The Pro-Kleen pet laundry detergent is specially formulated with antibacterial agents to disinfect killing Viruses, Fungi, and Bacteria.
For outdoor kennels, carry cases or cages that are not made of fabric, it is important to use anti-bacterial cleaner to remove dirt and kill viruses, fungi and other dangerous bacteria. It is again advisable to use s product specifically designed for this purpose so that it does not contain chemicals that are too harsh or fragranced, especially if your pet likes to eat in these areas. So be sure to carefully check ingredients and product descriptions.

Overall, regular cleaning of pet bedding and kennels is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for your pet and your home, and while it can be easy to overlook this since you are not the one sleeping in there, it is important to make it part of your cleaning routine!
